I received a complementary copy from the author, having worked with him in an office for three and a half years. He provides a short and entertaining critique of the vast and often unpleasant premises that have come to control many working lives. There are some helpful tips on survival, managing upward and dealing with conflict. He touches on topics that others prefer to avoid, eating at your desk for example. The poem on cube farms is the highlight. I eagerly await an extended edition with greater detail and perhaps extended real-life examples but overall essential reading material in the office and during the commute.
For anyone in the workplace, whether you are currently working, retired, or have not quite entered the working world, this book can be of great use. From ways to organize desk space to fun suggestions for livening up office meetings, Martin suggests that “work” and “enjoyment” are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Even for those in a noncorporate environment, the suggestions for how to “manage upward” and for increasing positive language can be attributed to many life situations.
