Wall of Dust is a story of the human spirit-of the pain of loss and the struggle to recover. Aisha, a Palestinian schoolteacher, becomes deranged after most of her class is accidentally killed by a missile fired from an Israeli gunship. She begins on a strange ritual, throwing stones at the "security barrier," the eight-meter tall concrete wall that separates much of the West Bank from Israel. She shouts the name of each dead child and hurls a stone at the concrete monolith. Initially alone, she is soon joined by others and her little ritual takes the form of a mass protest. At several points she might be stopped, or worse, but she is helped in small but significant ways by several other characters, Israeli and Palestinian. Each character who intercedes has experienced a loss-a career dead end, a family estrangement, a crisis of faith, a simple loss of hope-that guides their actions. The acts are small and personal a sniper misses a shot, a teacher comforts, a stranger embraces, a father forgives, an Islamist relents. Lyrically written, full of compassion for the people of Palestine and Israel and for the land they inhabit together, Wall of Dust is a tale of revelation, redemption, and the persistence of hope.

There are many books that place personal stories in political settings, but in "Wall of Dust," Timothy Niedermann artfully makes clear that the personal and the political are not that easily separated. For a non-fiction book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, "Wall of Dust" is even-handed without being polemically so. Various characters on both sides of the conflict have benign or destructive motivations and impulses, but all are fully human. The other great strength of the book is that along with the richly described lives of both Palestinians and Israelis, a third element emerges, the land itself, which takes on its own, full, significance. I read, and promptly forget, a lot of books. This one is going to stay with me. Highly recommended.

Wall of Dust Timothy Niedermann 9781928049289 Books Reviews

This is an extraordinary story, told from the viewpoint of a young woman, a teacher in a Palestinian refugee camp, about tragedy and survival, devastation and grace. I found this book riveting, and every chapter was intoxicatingly sublime. It's a terrific read.
A wonderful tale bringing the Palestinian-Israeli to a level that all of us can understand. Wall of Dust is brilliantly written and deserves a wide readership.
I loved the novel. I loved the slow rhythm, allowing me to deeply feel the story. It’s easy for me to “see” decors and characters when I read, but I can rarely hear them. Timothy Niedermann has that capacity; to make the book alive in that way. I’ve heard all those steps and feet hitting stones. And the wind, of course, becoming alive under our eyes and ears.
He created strong characters, even the secondary ones Hana, Zev… They are so real, it’s like I know them all so well."
The opening scene, where on a peaceful morning a Palestinian school is bombed and the parents come to school to pick the dead bodies of their children, broke my heart. I cried like a baby. I promise you this the author's realistic descriptions of Palestine/Israel border towns and the residents will haunt you long after you've read the last page.

All the characters are real and alive but the protagonist Aisha is particularly touching. She is a very young, simple Palestinian girl who unexpectedly discovers that she has become a symbol for resistance. I felt happy, though, when she gave her reply to the Islamic
Resistance leader shaming him for an attempt to turn the dead Palestinian children into martyrs and go assault Israelis' settlements
in their names. Aisha wants changes, but without violence and no matter the ordeals she has had to go through, she does not change her view
of things--rather she becomes stronger. As author Niedermann points out, violence gives only violence in return.

Timothy Niedermann successfully touches on human emotions, guilt, self-doubt, sorrow, anger, and happiness throughout the book. As I
approached the last pages I expected some horrible ending--let's face it, there are no happy endings in novels that tell the truth. But I
was very pleasantly surprised. It ended with hope. It ended with wisdom. It made me feel good actually!

I am not going to tell you all of it. Just read the book. A masterfully written novel. I highly recommend it.
great book. richly textured, heartbreaking... worth the read.
A very tough topic to cover, but this novel is very well done. I can visualize all the scenes in the story and feel the pain/joy/anger of the characters. Nice Job, Timothy.
