DCI Michael Thackeray is horrified when he learns that Laura Ackroyd, his newly pregnant girlfriend, has been persuaded to investigate the case of a young miner convicted of the murder of a policeman during the coal strike twenty years before. Thackeray had been a young copper then, only briefly involved, but he was well aware of the virtual war which had broken out between the strikers and the police and knew that feelings still ran high in the devastated pit villages which had never recovered from the defeats of 1984.
He watches as Laura is sucked into the campaign to free Billy Baxter, who has served twenty years for a murder he still claims he did not commit. Old tensions surface and the village is devastated yet again by the suspicious death of one of the former strike leaders and the arrival of a former London copper Intent of keeping Billy in jail and implicating others in the crime.
Thackeray and Laura's relationship is put under strain as the DCI is put in charge of the investigation and the village is convulsed by hatreds old and new. But in spite of their best efforts, official and unofficial, nothing it seems can prevent a violent end to twenty years of subterfuge and injustice.
Dust to Dust Ackroyd and Thackeray Mysteries Book 15 eBook Patricia Hall
First, this story happens AFTER "Dead Game," Hall's previous Thackery/Ackroyd novel. Reading the story first will give you all sorts of spoilers, including whodunit, for the novel.Second, the formatting is so bad as to be distracting. Large spaces between pages, no indents for paragraphs, spaces within words. If you can get past that, it's a pretty good story.
Third, Laura is investigating a 1984 murder that took place during the miners' strike. Like Val McDermid's "A Darker Domain," "Dust to Dust" is a very anti-Thatcher story that revolves around the strike. Hall does give another side, that of the police, but make no mistake as to where her loyalties lie. As a modern historian with decidedly liberal leanings, I appreciate the details of the emotions and events of the 1984 strike.
This is not a short story, it's a short novel, which was a nice surprise. I haven't finished it yet, but so far I'm enjoying it immensely.
NEW: Okay, I've finished it now. Hall maintained the suspense to the end. Most definitely worth the $3.99!!!

Dust to Dust Ackroyd and Thackeray Mysteries Book 15 eBook Patricia Hall Reviews
I've enjoyed the entire series so was looking forward to the ending. I wasn't disappointed although I will miss the characters.
A little bit disappointed with the end of this long running series.
I have read almost all of Patricia Hall's works. I like the settings and the characters and the plot development. The turmoil in Thackery/Achroyd relationship was a bit less which was a relief.
